So we went out to dinner with some friends last night and after dinner the server brought the receipts and a pen and after he left, Campbell started writing.

He's been able to write "CAM" for his name for a while now, and if we tell him which specific letters to write, he can sign cards or write "I LOVE YOU", so we didn't really pay attention to what he was doing - we assumed he was just writing random letters.

After a while I looked over and saw this...

I think - OK, that doesn't just look like random letters.
I ask, "Campbell, what are you writing?"
It's loud and I can't really hear what he says, so I ask the server if he has more paper and he rolls out a big length of receipt paper, and Campbell starts writing again.

I watch what he writes and ask him to help me read it

"CAMPbUEll"
He knows there's a silent P in his name, but this is the first time he's added the U
You can see the three 'bars' on his capital E

"WiN"

"MOMEYE"
This is supposed to be Mommy
That's a very interesting Y

"NOT H"
I had to help a little with the N, he couldn't get the slanty line right and was getting upset. He also made a very interesting T - like the Y and E, he's making them with bubble-type letters.

So that's the good news. Campbell is not even four years old yet and he's sounding out words that we've never taught him and writing them out. You can see on his name, he was sounding out "CAM-bull" which is obviously the "uh" sound, but he knows there's an E in there somewhere.

The bad news? For some reason he was attempting to write, "When Mommy is not happy at Campbell, she is a bad guy."

So you can see he was able to write, "Win Momeye not H.....Campbuell" before he ran out of paper. You can also see that this was what he was attempting to write on the first piece of paper.

You can see the "NOT HAP?E" at the top.

We're going to try to encourage him to write something a litltle....NICER next.
Maybe something about Star Wars...

He never fails to amaze us with his intelligence.
