If you don't know the story of how Megan and Andy met,
you have to go here first to find out how it happened!

It's very integral to the proposal story!

All done?

Good.

Let's get started.
(it's a bit lengthy - but aren't all good stories?!?)

Back around April 2000, I was wracking my brain trying to come up with the perfect proposal. If you know me at all, you'll know two things I pride myself on are my creativity and originality. Whatever I did - it would be at the very least - creative.

That's when it came to me - the ransom notes! - one of the first things I did to Megan while I was attempting to woo her. Only this time instead of kidnapping some Intel doll - I would be the kidnappee. But where to do it? Well, we have always loved the Museum of Science and Industry and Megan had mentioned that it's been a long time since she's been there and maybe they could go soon? It would be a perfect site.

And thus began - The Plan.

The next problem - how to get the ransom notes around the museum? That's when the second flash came - friends and family! I would get a bunch of relatives and friends to be at each "stop" and each group would have another ransom note. Each ransom note would be a cryptic clue that she would have to decipher in order to find the next one. All the note-keepers were instructed not to give any hints and when Megan figured it out, they would join the entourage behind Megan so that by the end - she had about 30 people with her!

Now with The Plan semi-ironed out, I had to find out who would be willing to help - first I called my loyal chums, then my family, then Megan's family and her friends. This proved to be very fun for me to torment Megan, because instead of trying to be sneaky and going through her rolodex for numbers - I would just call and ask for them.

"What's Claire's number?"

"Why do you need her number?
She lives in Texas!"

She knew something was up and that it most likely had something to do with the proposal but she didn't want to know (and it's a good thing because I wouldn't have told her!) So I rounded up about 30 people to participate, but now I needed a date. August 19, 2000 was the initial date thrown into the ring, and I was sure I'd have to go through 20 dates trying to get one that everyone had free.

AMAZINGLY enough - everyone was available!!!

Next I had to make sure that the people who were coming from Missouri, Texas and California had lodging and transportation. Then I had to come up with a sufficiently convincing lie in order to get Megan to the museum. This proved to be much harder than anticipated. Megan and I had just discussed our funds the week before so when Su informed Megan that she would like to go to the museum on August 19th - "Sorry, we're broke" was the reply.

Hmmm.

"But I have free tickets to the 10:30 am Titanic show", was Su's next brilliant lie.

"But we should go to karate practice!", was Megan's next unconscious attempt at thwarting The Plan.

"We can skip it!", I said, wondering if Megan knew The Plan all along and was trying to give me an ulcer.

Somewhere in all this Plan induced mayhem, Megan and I found time to go ring browsing. Not shopping, because I was deadset against Megan just picking out her ring. Stating her likes and dislikes as well and a general idea of what she would like - sure. But not pointing and saying, "Buy me that!" After the first trip I knew what I was going to get. I went back a few times to pick out the diamond and the sidestones then they were off to be made from scratch. It would be ready for pickup August 16th!
Talk about cutting it close!

Two days and counting.

Ring in pocket, I made and printed out all the ransom notes and got envelopes and made maps for everyone and schedules so everyone would be on time and not get to a post early. Then I brought them all, including the video camera for posterity, over to Dave's house who was my right hand man in all this - without him, The Plan would not have been. I gave Dave some last minute instructions and wished him well in getting all the people arranged and in place.

August 18, 2000

The Plan is brought to its knees. The night before, there is...a fight. About what is not important, what is important is that The Plan almost didn't happen. As Megan and I were talking, Megan's roommate, Jen, called me in a panic.

"How am I supposed to get ready and leave in the morning if Megan is over here??"

"Don't worry", I replied. "I'll get her to come over."

Luckily, through persistent pleading and begging, I was able to persuade Megan to come over and make up.

Unfortunately, I slept about 1½ hours that night.

At the most.

I busied myself writing thank you notes to all the participants and a nice letter to my Mom. The hour from 6-7 a.m. was spent in bed staring at the clock, waiting for the alarm to go off.

The next major hitch in The Plan was the fact that the Air and Water show was the same day. Everyone was worried that traffic would be a nightmare. Myself included. So when we left early, I did not expect to run into....NO traffic. That's right, we breezed on down the highway. Well, not exactly breezed, because when I realized that we were very early, I reduced speed to about 45. Megan slept the whole way there. Thank goodness.

Phone Trouble

A big part of The Plan was notifying Su by cell phone when we were about 10 minutes away from the Museum so everyone would know to take their positions. Well, it's hard to get a signal when you're deep in a museum.

So I was not able to contact Su.

And we were 30 minutes early.

Thus begins...the panic attack.

I could not BELIEVE that after SIX months of planning, it would all go down the toilet because of a crappy cell phone!! So, after we parked, I proceeded to fake a panic attack, hoping to stall Megan for a while.

Well, it wasn't really faked.

It was pretty much a real panic attack - complete with sweaty palms and racing heart.

After about 20 minutes, we went inside while I desperately searched for someone I could signal and let them know Megan was here. Once inside I saw Dave and Becky! Oh no! While faking a relapse, I turned Megan so her back was to them. They finally disappeared into the gift shop. I led Megan to the pickup window where we were to meet Su and excused myself to the restroom. On the way I found Ed, one of my oldest friends, but a friend that Megan has never met. With some last second pointers, and a video camera on REC, Ed went to find Megan...

The United 727 This is where I had been spending the last 2 hours with my parents and Megan's mom (her dad regrettably couldn't make it) pretty much pulling my hair out, wondering if all was going well. Imagine my relief when the whole crew came sauntering down the hall.

To make a long story short - I hit a knee and asked.

She said yes.

(What did you think she'd say?!?)
